Palermo Capitale della Cultura 2018 has officially begun

Great attendance to the opening event of “Palermo Capitale della Cultura 2018”. Over 150 press officers and more than 26000 views on the official ‘Palermo Capitale della Cultura 2018’ Facebook page over the first six hours.

 The ceremony was attended by the Major of Palermo, Mr. Leoluca Orlando, who presented the project to the public, together with the Councillor of Culture, Mr. Andrea Cusumano, in the presence of the President of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Paolo Gentilonithe Minister of the Cultural Activities, Mr. Dario Franceschini, the President of the Sicilian Parliament, Mr. Gianfranco Micciché, and the Governor of the Region, Mr. Nello Musumeci.

During the cerimony the official logo of the event was presented to the public; created by an Art student, 22th years old Sabrina Ciprì, it synthetyzes the P shape – initial of the name of the town – in all the idioms that left a mark over the historycal heritage of Palermo: Arab, Hebrew, Phoenician and Greek.

For the President of the Council, Paolo Gentiloni: “The spirit of rebirth of Palermo is good for Sicily and Italy”. The project connects 43 different institutions. An overview project and not a simple calendar of events: its strength lies in the newtwork compoes by the cultural institutions of the town, its associations and its vital and run-in festivals; in having expanded to the Metropolitan City and throughout the region, multiplying the added value of the Manifesta Biennale12 which will open in June and will lead the city in the world of international art for five months.

More than 800 events scheduled in the artistic, musical, theatrical, cultural and sports initiatives field. Several international appointments will lead the image of the city of Palermo towards the biggest topic of the third millennium: peace, respect for legality, solidarity and active participation, values that have chosen Palermo as privileged arena. To kickstart this rich program, Friday the 2nd of March the Aga Khan Trust for Culture will present in a world premiere the plan for the reconstruction of the Souq, the Umayyad Mosquee and the Minaret of the city of Aleph, UNESCO World Heritage Site destroyed on 2013 under the bombs. 43 the public authorities and partners involved during the event.
